MOTOR CONTROL PROGRAM

MOTOR CONTROL I – BEGINNER

In the field of motor and equipment maintenance, installation, modification and trouble shooting, the ability to read, understand, interpret, use and design schematics, ladder and wiring diagrams for motor control circuits is critical to success.

Several types of drawings and diagrams will be examined during this beginner course of the program.  The differences between these drawings will be emphasized and the purpose and flow of each type will be clarified.  To learn the symbolic language, individual component symbols will be presented along with an explanation of their function and purpose in the circuit.

The following topics will be studied:

  • Basic principles of motor controls
  • Definitions, abbreviations and symbols
  • Common control equipment, devices and symbols
  • Motor controls and schematics
  • Components of control circuit schematics
  • Magnetic control
  • Magnetic motor starters
  • Basic control circuits
  • Overcurrent protection for control circuits
  • Indicator (pilot) lights and illuminated push buttons
  • Selector switches
  • Reversing controls for 3 phase motors
  • Reversing single phase motors sequencing control master stop function
  • Motor winding connections
  • Three phase motors
  • Dual-voltage, nine lead, three-phase motors (Wye and Delta)
  • Single phase, dual voltage motors
  • Detailed study, explanation and interpretation of Article 430 motors, motor circuits and controllers
  • Understanding and interpreting ladder diagrams and wiring diagrams
    • Ladder diagram rules
    • Trouble shooting control circuits
    • Two wire control circuits
    • Three wire control circuits

MOTOR CONTROL II – INTERMEDIATE – INTENSIVE CLASSROOM & LABORATORY HANDS-ON MOTOR CONTROL INSTRUCTION & INSTALLATION

Building on the knowledge and skills acquired in Motor Controls I, students will progress to the motor control laboratory and obtain real world motor control wiring experience.  They will design and install two wire and three wire control circuits for the purpose of controlling single phase and three motors utilizing magnetic motor starters with overloads, multiple stop-start push button stations, stop-forward-reverse push button stations with mechanical, electrical and push button interlocks while incorporating limit switches, pressure switches, etc.

Students will be given verbal and/or written motor control descriptions, will design both wiring and ladder control circuit diagrams, will wire and install the push button stations, magnetic motor starter appropriate overloads and overcurrent devices and will size and protect all conductors (control and power) to comply with Article 430 NEC.

Gracias!

INSTITUTO MONTERROSA DE ELECTRICIDAD Y SOLAR

EDUCATING & TRAINING IN THE ELECTRICAL & SOLAR TRADES SINCE 2008

El Instituto Monterrosa de Electricidad y Solar is a bilingual instruction center for those who want to learn the electrical and solar trades.  Our programs are designed to allow anyone interested in learning these trades or already working in these trades to improve their lives by allowing them to get a new job in the electrical and solar trades, create their own small business, or improve upon their knowledge to maintain competitive in the labor market.

In collaboration with Construction Craft Training Center, we offer electrical and solar programs.  All programs which are accredited by the State of California and approved and recognized by the Department of Apprenticeship Standards.  Our founder, owner and main professor, Mario Monterrosa, has more than 43 years of experience as an electrician and electrical contractor, 27 years of experience giving classes at City College of San Francisco, the electrical union here in San Francisco, and 7 years of experience teaching and directing Instituto Monterrosa with a California teaching credential.  Through all this experience and with the help of teaching aids, Professor Monterrosa posseses the knowledge and effective methods to teach those interested in these trades.

Although the programs are English-Spanish bilingual, all electrical codes and theories, designs, mathematics, calculations, formulas, and hand-on training are explained in both Spanish and English.  All textbooks, hand outs and examinations are in English.  We are always prepared to respond to any student questions in Spanish to help those who require more help in their native language.  The prerequisites for the programs are basic and all are welcome – men, women, beginners to advanced!

Please call 415.368.1608 to schedule a tour of Instituto Monterrosa and discuss the prices of the various programs.  Thank you!

NOTA:

NOTE:

Although Mr. Monterrosa designs and plans each study program at Instituto Monterrosa, he uses teacher’s aids to help teach and attend to the students in each program. The program schedules may change due to unforeseen circumstances.  More class instruction time may be required if the instructor determines that additional instruction is required to explain a particularly difficult concept.  This extra time may require longer classes or adding more class meetings to a program schedule.  Each course require a minimum number of students to register for the course to begin.  If the minimum is not reached, the class will be rescheduled when the minimum number of students are registered.
